gcompris in kannada

Now enjoy your favorite free and open source educational software gcompris in Kannada.All the strings help and see everything in Kannada. It is best suitable for children of Kannada medium schools or Kannada speaking children around the world.

I have spent many days in translating this famous software to Kannada. kindly use it for the benefit of Kannada medium students. Very few resources are available in Kannada. Feel free to comment or mail to me for any problems in installation and use of this resource.

This blog explains how to install / setup kannada in gcompris in edubuntu/ ubuntu linux distribution.

There are two ways to do it.. 

Simple method:


  1. download the file from the following link click here
  2. File will be saved downloads folder
  3. open the linux terminal. press alt + f2.
  4. type gnome-terminal in the dialogue box
  5. now type this command
  6. sudo cp ~/Downloads/gcompris.mo /usr/share/locale/kn/LC_MESSAGES/
  7. enter the password for the above command.. so now your file is copied into required location.
  8. now go to system settings by clicking on the circle like icon on top right of the desktop
  9. select keyboard layout
  10. select kannada in list 
  11. close it..now restart your system to enjoy gcompris in kannda
Little bit complex method for super users
  1. download the gcompris.po file from the link click here
  2. File will be saved downloads folder
  3. open linux terminal - alt+f2 - type gnome-terminal
  4. type the following command in prompt
  5.  ~$ sudo msgfmt ~/Downloads/gcompris.po --output-file /usr/share/locale/kn/gcompris.mo
  6. enter the password
  7. if prompt returns without any error messages your task is successfull
  8. go to system settings-->keyboard layout-->select kannada in the list
  9. restart the system to use gcompris in kannada

Voice integration:

 completer voice translations can be downloaded from below link and integrated to gcompris with git--make--make install

  If you find any mistakes in my translations ..Give me the details like activity name and where it is appearing , wrong word and correct word.. so that i can correct it. you can also do it by installing lokalize sofware from ubuntu software centre and open the gcompris.po file in it.
